What we do

At the Deafness Council of New South Wales, we endeavor to support and assist our member organisations to:

  • bring together representatives of the various bodies engaged in promoting or protecting the interests and welfare of deaf people.
  • coordinate the activities of organisations serving deaf people
  • promote unity, understanding and communication between all interested in the welfare of deaf people of all ages.
  • make representation to the Deafness Forum Limited, the national Peak Body in deafness.
  • make representation to the state government of New South Wales , regarding:
    • Legislation affecting deaf people
    • Legislation governing production of noise and other health and other sanitation conditions which may induce hearing loss
    • The need to inform the public on how to preserve their hearing
    • The services and needs of organisations serving deaf people
    • The improvement of facilities and the means provided for the education, training and welfare of deaf people.
  • promote, encourage and assist in the improvement of all aspects of education, training, welfare, habilitation and rehabilitation of deaf people.
  • consider proposals and make recommendations for the training of staff involved in the delivery of services to deaf people.
  • encourage and support scientific and statistical research into causes of hearing loss
  • promote research and development of technology for deaf people.
