Subject: Cochlear purchases patent rights Otologics
Dear all,
There has been some recent media activity regarding Cochlear's purchase of
patent rights for Otologics technology and the potential production of a
totally implantable device. Here is an example of one of the media clips
Clip Extract... SYDNEY, Sept 9 AAP - Hearing implant company Cochlear Ltd
has secured a license agreement to purchase patent rights, know-how as well
as joint development activities with Otologics LLC for $US25 million
($A29.02 million). The agreement with the Colorado-based company will allow
the company to use Otologics' technology with cochlear implants...
Your families and recipients may be asking questions regarding this.
A totally implantable device is many, many years away from
commercialisation, and IF it was ever to be commercialised, having a
cochlear implant now would not negate recipients from getting a totally
implantable device at that time. Evidence shows that delaying implants to
wait for new technology rather going ahead with existing devices, could
have a detrimental impact on hearing outcomes, especially with children.
Let me know any questions or concerns.
Regards
Lisa Shannon
